Introduction

Carpentry has always had a broad remit but from the late middle ages onwards joiners came to be recognised as a separate craft within carpentry. As fashions and new ideas developed, more and more tools evolved and many more sub crafts were developed such as carvers and cabinet makers.

More recently shopfitters and even kitchen fitters have arrived on the scene as the carpentry spectrum broadens further.

We would suggest that timber framing too is a separate craft with its own tools and techniques; yet another discipline within carpentry. A lot of our methods are early medieval in essence but coupled with modern power tools we can make short work of the more laborious bits.
