Repair Projects

Hestley Hall barn

This moated manorial site has an interesting group of barns the earliest of which dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century. Having repaired much of the earlier fabric we were asked to carry out repairs to the 17th century extension at the southern end of the main barn and for the first time ever we felt that the surviving fabric was in such poor condition the only way to carry out proper repairs was to dismantle the remnants and take it back to the workshop. We replaced any components that were missing or beyond reasonable repair and then returned to site and reinstated the frame onto the brick plinth.

With that complete we were asked to reinstate the roof frame but this was something of a challenge! The recent roof frame was in a terrible condition and was built from a mix of species in the 19th century. Much of it was lost over the last decade or so and the slates had been removed by previous owners and sold off, supposedly to fund repairs but clearly this never happened! The current owners consent allowed for the roof to be rebuilt at the 19th century pitch and covered with slate but inside they had permission to rebuild it as a queen post roof as per the original 16th century framing. So, with some initial concerns we set about building a 16th century roof at a 19th century pitch over a very, very irregular shaped building!
