"Weavers", Nayland

This richly moulded and carved floor frame from the second half of the 16th century had been hacked to a lower level in the 19th century so that it could be plastered over. We were asked by the owners to restore the damaged mouldings and to reinstate a floral carved boss to the centre. The remains of the centre boss showed leaf tips at the corners and the complete floor frame in the next room had a large rose motif (with different leaf ends!) in the same postition. Having scribed a large block of dry oak to the boss position, Mark Goldsworthy carved the rose in his workshop and blended the leaf ends in-situ.

Once completed the owners buildings contractors stained the whole floor to achieve a consistent tone.
