Contemporary Aisle Barn Frame, Cheshire

Here is the first large frame cut by the team in Cheshire, a contemporary aisle barn frame for the sitting room, designed to tie in with buildings already currently on site and similar historic structures found in the region. It has been designed as an eco house using traditional materials for their low embodied energy. Once completed it will be heated by passive solar gain and woodchip fuel.

We used our own oak where possible with the naturally curved timbers being selected for braces. By cutting on site with a mobile Woodmizer we were able to utilise whatever the tree provided and incorporate natural shapes into the design straight off the saw. The fantastic two storey height will remain open to the apex giving the sitting room a very spacious feel.

The frame was erected in two days with the help of a spider crane and some unseasonably good November weather. The build seems to have suddenly progressed, at first the instant height was a shock but we are now getting used to that!
