New Framing Projects

Walkway, Tower of London

Historic Royal Palaces asked us to become involved with their "Fortress" project which was all about getting Tower of London visitors to think more about the castle as a military site.

One large aspect of this was to add a covered walkway to part of the east wall as an approximation of what a covered "brattice" may have looked like. This kind of structure would have added more cover and protection to soldiers manning the walls during an attack but given the design of the Victorian stonework parapet as well as making it reasonably useable for the public a few compromises had to be made. However we were determined to make the rest of it as accurate as possible so we hand finished all of the beams and the planking was sawn in such a way as to represent pit or trestle sawn timbers.

Site assembly had it's logistical issues as there was virtually no spare room to manouvre so we had to ensure that the timbers arrived on the truck in the right order as well as deal with the implications of working 60 feet up on a narrow wall! With half a day to spare we completed and handed over to HRP and became tourists for the rest of the day!
