New Framing Projects

Anglo Saxon frame

In 2005 the recreated Anglo-Saxon Village at West Stow lost one of their buildings to fire, we were asked to rebuild it using appropriate techniques and wholly hand converted timbers. The hewing alone took two of us two months! The reconstruction has earthfast posts and a boarded cellar as well as large cleft oak planks on the floor. Simple joinery was used throughout and the frame was then clad with hand cleft oak planking supplied by Westover Woodlands. The design is basically the same as the first reconstruction but we as a team aren't totally convinced by it. Having said that it was fun to cut and the hewing practice was very good for working in a few new axes!
